Samuel Amoyal is a surfer from Hossegor whom you can often spot on the Landes line-ups, getting barrelled on a foam surfboard or softboard. Seeing him have more fun than anyone else at the peak on his foamy, we decided we had to bring him into our Softboard Center team and have him test out a foam surfboard.
Hi Samuel, could you introduce yourself in a few words for those who don't know you?
Hi, I'm Sam, 22 years old, born in Biarritz and have been surfing since I was 7. I've already tried a bit of everything in board sports (longboard, bodyboard, skimboard, surf, bodysurf).
We usually see you more often on a foam surfboard than on a classic PU board. Is there a particular reason for this?
I usually take out the PU board for turns. So, I take out the foam surfboard in barrels to have fun, get some good vision, and not take myself too seriously. It also prevents breaking too many boards!
You've ridden various Catch Surf foam surfboard models for a few years. You just received a Mullet Fresh Bean 6'0 which you tested in good winter conditions. Can you tell us about this Mullet Softboard?
I really like it! The slightly wide nose with not too much rocker gives me excellent paddling. The round tail plus quad fin combo is a real treat for barrel sessions.
It's super maneuverable and moves very well, even for turning waves. It's the first in the Mullet Surf range I've had the chance to test, and it's really great.
How do you see the future of foam surfboards, and who would you recommend them to and why?
I think more and more people will surf foam surfboards because for small, crowded summer waves, they're perfect for having fun without overthinking it. Plus, you can also go into barrels or shorebreaks to mess around with your friends.
As for who, I think these are boards for everyone and all levels. Beginners can learn safely, and experienced surfers can have a blast in all types of waves. There really is something for everyone!
