How to Choose a Foam Surfboard for Kids
Choosing a foam surfboard for a child is not a detail. Too big, too small or wrong for their level, and frustration sets in fast. Get the size right and a foam board turns the first sessions into pure fun, which is how a real passion starts. Here is how to pick the right soft-top by age, weight and ability.
What size surfboard for a child?
Size comes down to age and weight first, then gets adjusted for ability. These are the most reliable starting points.

| Age | Build | Recommended length |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 7 years | light | 5′0 to 5′6 |
| 8 to 10 years | average | 5′6 to 6′0 |
| 10 to 12 years | taller | 6′0 to 7′0 |
| Beginner teen | large | 7′0 to 7′6 |
A child heavier or taller than average is better off sizing up; a very light child can drop down one step.
Weight and volume
Volume, measured in litres, is what determines float. The more a board carries, the more waves the child catches, so the more fun they have and the faster they improve. For a beginner, always go generous on volume and thickness, and size down later once they are comfortable.

Which board for which ability?
Beginner: a generous soft-top, plenty of volume and stability, small waves and whitewater. The goal is to stand up and have fun.
Intermediate: once they are paddling into waves unassisted, a shorter soft-top, around 6 feet, which turns more easily, so they can take a wave both ways and start their first turns.
Advanced: a higher-performance board matched to their size, with less volume, and accessories in grom sizes, handle, fins and leash.

Safety
The soft foam absorbs impact and clearly cuts the risk of injury, both in wipeouts and around other surfers.
Float
Width, thickness and generous volume make balancing easier. The child pops up more easily and stays on their feet longer.
Easy pop-up
A board that carries catches waves effortlessly. The child paddles less, rides more whitewater and keeps wanting to come back.
Progress
More waves caught, more pop-ups repeated. In surfing, repetition is what builds skill. The right soft-top saves weeks.
